The works in this series are named after the twelve book cases in Sir Robert Cotton's library, which were topped with the busts of the first Roman Emperors. Cotton’s manuscripts were catalogued according to their position relative to these sculptures. The British Library which is now their home maintains Cotton's original shelf mark. For example, the Magna Carta (1215) is shelved at Cotton MS Augustus 11.106.
