Begin afresh is a small essayistic sculpture, opening a sequence of folded connected thoughts. These thoughts revolve around the smallest of the assembled photographs, taken from a book documenting the 1990’s road protests. This shows a woman standing in a misty wood, clinging onto a tree trunk. She appears mythic, but she is political. She is placed in the context of high modernity as represented by the Glass House interior by Phillip Johnston 1949. In the other two images, by placement, the black branch of the bare winter tree bursts miraculously into leaf, giving the title of the work.
